The juniper berry is the female seed cone made by the polar types of junipers. It is not a true berry but its odd roundness and united scales make it look like a berry. Some of the artifacts are used as species. Juniper berries are also used to smell gin. According to a FAQ document juniper berries are the only spice that comes from red pine.All the same,tar and bark from pine trees are sometimes thought as spices too.

     Plinia caulifora, the brazilian grapetree , or jabuticaba , is a tree in the family Myrtaceae, native to Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo states in Brazil. Related species in the genus Myrciaria, often refered by the same common names, are native to Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru Bolivia. The tree is grown for its purplish - black , white - pulped fruits ; they can be eaten raw or be used to make jellies, juice or wine.

Tree Information:
 

                                     A popular fruit bearer in its native Brazil, jabuticaba's name is derived from the Tupi term "Jabotin" which means " like turtle fat" in reference to its pulp. In Brazil the tree thrives from sea level to about 3,000 feet in altitued.
                                                                 Additional jabuticaba tree info tells us that the specimen is a slow growing tree or shrub that reaches heights of between 10 and 45 feet. They are frost intolerant and sensitive to salinity . Jabuticaba fruit trees are related to the Surinam cherry, Java Plum, and guava. Storage:


                        Trials to extend storage life of jabuticaba fruits were done with fully ripe and unripe fruits . These included storing 6,12 and 24 degree C with or without waxing using " brogdex tomato wax" or wrapping with " Omnifilm" plastic film or a combination of both. No fungicides wre used unripe fruits did not complete ripening at any temperature and wre discarded at latest trials.

               Honey-berry or honey berry is a common name for the tender of various plants and may invoke to:

  • Mamonicilla, or spanish lime ( Melicoccus bijugatus), a soapberry tree with a tender fruit described as between a lychee and a lime.
  • Blue-berried honeysuckle ( Lonicera caerulea) a variety of honeysuckle with a tender, blueberry -like fruit.
  • European nettle tree, ( Celtis austrails), a indirect tree with edible dark purple, sweet berry-like fruit.

              Huckleberry is a name used in North America for several plants in two closely related genera in the family Ericaceae  Gaylussacia and Vaccinium. The huckleberry is the state fruti of Idaho. Some vaccinium species, such as the red huckleberry, are always called huckleberries. Other species may be called blueberries or huckleberries in different location . There is much confusion is naming of berries in America. The garden huckleberry ( Solanum melanocerasum) is not a true huckleberry but a member of the nightshade Family.

                         The fruit of most species of huckleberries can be eaten. The berries are small and round. They are usually less than 5 mm in diameter and contain 10 seeds. Berries range in color from bright red, through dark purple, are into the blues. In taste the berries range from tart to sweet. they have a flavor similar to that of a blueberry. Huckleberries are well liked by many mammals such as bears and humans.

Seasons/ Availability:


                            Huckleberries are available in fresh from during the summer months.

Applications:


                    Huckleberries may be used fresh, yet they have a very short self life and thus are most commonly found in frozen form. They  are very well suited to cooked and baked preparations, including pies, muffins, cookies, breads, pancakes and waffles. Huckleberries make great compotes and syrups alone or in combination with other berries such as strawberries and raspberries.

              After washing and drying huckleberries place on a cookie sheet, cover with a paper towel, and place in freezer. Once frozen , put berries in a sealed container and put back in freezer for later use.



         Guava are plants in the genus Psidium of the family Myrtaceae. There are about 100 species of the tropical shrubs and small trees in the genus. They are native to Mexico, the Carbbean, central America and the northern part of South America.Now they are found in all the tropical and in some subtropical, regions because they are edible fruits.

Tree:

                  A mature guava tree can produce 40-70 Lbs of fruit per year. Even a patio tree kept 4-6 ft can give you plenty to enjoy and share trees can grow outdoors in zones 8-10, or indoors in colder areas. Just bring your potted tree indoors for the winter. It makes a great house plant. The guava is self-pollinating. Like most self-pollinating fruit trees, you will get even more production with a second one to cross-pollinate with.

                              Grapefruit is a citrus fruit grown in sub-tropical places. It is bigger than an orange and its often more sour, but many types of grapefruit have other flavors. The grapefruit is a subtropical citrus tree known for its sour to semi-sweet fruit. Grapefruit is a hybrid originating in Barbados as an accidental cross between two introduced species, sweet orange (C.sinesis) and pomelo or shaddock, both of which are introduced  from Asia in the 17 century.
                              
                           America is the world's largest consumer of grapefruit, with large commerical groves in Arizona, California, Florida and Texas. But the grapefruit ancestor, the pummelo, comes from far away grapefruit it's native to Malasysia and Indonesia.
